‘Non nobis solum’ (‘Not for ourselves alone’) is the motto at this small prep – with ties to Sherborne School and Sherborne Girls’ – situated in a charming Dorset market town. This message of selflessness and inclusivity permeates all aspects of school life, be it through community-mindedness, the involvement of every student in drama productions or commitment not to ‘put pupils into boxes’. The first phase of the 13-million redevelopment of the sports centre has delivered climbing walls and an indoor hockey pitch; and the Accelerated Reading Scheme means the new library is getting plenty of use. Most families live within twenty miles of the school, and parents praise it for being ‘very down to earth’. Leavers skip off to the Sherborne seniors – having already benefitted from strong links which see the prep’s curriculum enhanced with extension opportunities using specialist teachers and facilities – as well as Wellington, Canford and Stowe, with plenty of scholarships and awards.
