With our school being so close to the beautiful Jurassic Coast, we had to acknowledge the Great British Beach Clean week this year.
Whilst on a Geography trip to the spectacular Lulworth Cove, our pupil environmental ambassadors led the others in the collecting and disposing of any rubbish spotted on the beach. The children did not need much persuading and there was a sense of pride in scouting for plastics and preventing them from entering the coastal ecosystem. There were celebrations when one boy found a plastic straw and discussions with their Geography and Science teachers tied this small act to the ecology topics, they have been exploring in the school curriculum. Working in situ brings the ecological challenge to light and the children impressed us all with their dedication.
The Geography field trip was a chance for the students to practise a variety of geographical techniques from asking members of the public to complete brief questionnaires, to annotated diagrams and bi-polar matrixes. They needed to use their observational skills to several answer question and they looked at how the Lulworth Estate team manage the environment as well as the physical geography aspects of how these unique land forms are created in the first place.
The day ended with some scrumptious and well-deserved ice cream on the beach.
