Year 6 Make Earthquake-Proof Buildings

Year 6 Science

Year 6 made earthquake-proof buildings using jelly, marshmallows and spaghetti/wooden sticks.

The class have been studying plate tectonics and have been looking at how earthquakes are caused. In the last few lessons they have looked at how buildings in earthquake prone countries, such as Japan and the USA, cope with such frequent earthquakes. Japan experiences over 1500 earthquakes every year!

The children's challenge encouraged them to use their problem solving skills to design and create an earthquake-proof building using sugar filled equipment (much to their enjoyment as the odd marshmallow disappeared during the task!)
